Congress-led UDF heads for decisive victory in Kerala Assembly elections, leading in 104 seats, as LDF suffers a major setback after ten years in power
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has resigned from his post following a decisive defeat of the ruling Left Democratic Front in the Assembly elections, paving the way for the Congress-led United Democratic Front to return to power after a decade.
Vijayan submitted his resignation to Governor Rajendra Arlekar at the Raj Bhavan, which was formally accepted. The Governor has instructed him to continue as interim Chief Minister until the new government is sworn in.
Kerala Election Result UDF Surge Ends LDF Rule
As per the latest counting trends, the UDF is leading in 104 out of 140 Assembly constituencies, indicating a clear mandate for political change in the state after ten years of LDF governance.
The results signal a significant shift in voter sentiment, with the electorate opting for a change in leadership and governance model.
Pinarayi Vijayan Resignation Follows Crushing LDF Defeat
The resignation of Pinarayi Vijayan comes in the wake of what is being described as one of the most substantial electoral setbacks for the LDF in recent years. The alliance, which had secured consecutive terms, has faced a strong anti-incumbency wave in this election.
Officials confirmed that Vijayan will continue in a caretaker capacity to ensure administrative continuity until the transition of power is completed.
Key UDF Victories Strengthen Return to Power
Among the prominent victories for the UDF, Chandy Oommen, son of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, secured a massive win from the Puthuppally constituency with a margin of 52,907 votes.
Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala also registered a significant victory from Haripad, winning by over 23,000 votes.
The Indian Union Muslim League, a key ally in the UDF, is leading in 23 out of the 27 seats it contested, further consolidating the alliance’s dominant position.
“The mandate clearly reflects the people’s decision for change after a decade of LDF governance,” a senior UDF leader stated.
