Chennai: In a deeply disturbing incident from Chennai, Nagalakshmi, a 41-year-old entrepreneur and the face behind the popular saree brand “Sree Sai Silks,” was allegedly murdered by her husband, Subramanian, inside their residence in Nanganallur. The accused later died by suicide, leaving behind two sons and a shattered family.

The incident came to light when the couple’s younger son returned home from college and discovered the bodies of both parents, in what police describe as a case of domestic violence escalating into murder-suicide.

Entrepreneur Behind ‘1 Minute Saree’ Trend

Nagalakshmi had built a strong presence on Instagram, where she promoted her innovative “1 Minute Saree” concept, enabling women to wear sarees easily without traditional draping. Through her brand Sree Sai Silks, she sold pre-pleated, lapel, and zip sarees, gaining popularity among urban consumers.

She frequently collaborated with television and film personalities, and her business had grown significantly through online promotions, classes, and influencer marketing. Known for appearing as a model for her own products, she had become a recognizable face in Chennai’s boutique fashion space.

Family Struggles and Separation

According to initial reports, Nagalakshmi and her husband Subramanian, aged 52, had been facing long-standing family issues. The couple had reportedly separated a few years ago, with Subramanian moving to Madurai and living with his sister.

During this period, Nagalakshmi single-handedly managed the household, expanded her business, and ensured quality education for her sons. Their elder son is pursuing medical studies in Russia, while the younger son is studying dentistry in Chennai.

Sources indicate that Subramanian returned to Chennai recently and reconciled with the family nearly 10 days before the incident, reportedly apologizing for past issues. Nagalakshmi is said to have accepted him back into the household.

However, tensions resurfaced shortly after, culminating in a violent altercation between the couple.

Police sources state that the argument escalated into a physical confrontation. Taking advantage of the fact that the younger son was away at college, Subramanian allegedly attacked Nagalakshmi with a machete, leading to her death on the spot.

After committing the crime, he reportedly sent a message to his son stating,

“Mom and I will no longer be there for you.”

He then died by suicide in another room.

The younger son, alarmed by the message, rushed home only to witness the tragic aftermath. Police were informed immediately, and the bodies were taken into custody for post-mortem examination.
