In a major political earthquake, the BJP has crossed the majority mark in West Bengal for the first time, ending Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year rule and reshaping eastern India’s political map

Kolkata: In one of the biggest political upsets in recent Indian electoral history, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is heading toward its first-ever government in West Bengal, delivering a historic blow to the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

As vote counting continues across the state, the BJP has already crossed the 148-seat majority mark needed to form the government in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, with multiple media outlets reporting the party moving close to or beyond the 200-seat mark in trends.

This marks the first time in West Bengal’s political history that the BJP is set to form a government in the state, ending TMC’s uninterrupted rule of nearly 15 years.

Modi-Shah Campaign Changes Bengal’s Political Landscape
Political observers believe the aggressive campaign led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah played a defining role in the BJP’s breakthrough.

Over the last two months, Narendra Modi addressed multiple mega rallies across Bengal, while Amit Shah reportedly spent extensive time on the ground, overseeing booth-level management and constituency-specific campaign strategies.

International agency Reuters also reported that BJP’s campaign in Bengal focused heavily on governance, border security, illegal immigration concerns, welfare outreach, and local economic dissatisfaction.

BJP is believed to have expanded outreach among urban voters, migrant communities, traders, youth groups, and local cultural networks.

Historic Voter Turnout
According to election updates, West Bengal recorded one of its highest voter turnouts in assembly election history, crossing 92% turnout, reflecting extraordinary public participation.

Massive Setback for TMC
For TMC and Mamata Banerjee, this result represents one of the toughest electoral setbacks since the party came to power in 2011.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly Election, TMC had secured 213 seats, while BJP emerged as the principal opposition with 77 seats. This year’s trends show a dramatic reversal in Bengal’s political mood.
West Bengal’s political map may never look the same again.
