A suspected AC explosion sparked a deadly fire in Vivek Vihar, Delhi, killing nine and injuring 12, with electronic locks and narrow exits hampering escape

New Delhi: A devastating fire in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area early Sunday claimed nine lives and left 12 others critically injured after a suspected air conditioner explosion triggered a rapid blaze in a four-storey residential building. The incident occurred around 3:15 a.m., when most residents were asleep, leaving little time for evacuation.

According to initial reports, the fire originated on the second floor and quickly engulfed the structure, which housed eight flats. Victims include two women, one child, and six men. Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly after receiving alerts, launching a large-scale rescue operation.

Vivek Vihar Fire Incident: Rapid Spread and Structural Challenges

Officials stated that the fire spread swiftly due to combustible materials and confined internal spaces. The building’s layout, comprising four flats at the front and four at the rear, posed significant challenges, particularly for residents in the back section who had limited access to exits.

Smoke inhalation and restricted ventilation intensified the crisis. Reports indicate that some doors equipped with electronic locking systems failed to open during the emergency, while narrow staircases further obstructed evacuation efforts.

“The fire spread within minutes, and many residents were trapped due to smoke and access constraints. Rescue teams are inspecting every section of the building,” said Shahdara DCP Rajendra Prasad Meena.

Fire brigade units reached the location within minutes and worked alongside police and local authorities to rescue trapped occupants. Several individuals were pulled out and rushed to nearby hospitals, where many remain in critical condition.

AC Explosion Suspected in Delhi Fire Accident

Eyewitness accounts suggest that an air conditioner explosion may have triggered the blaze, although officials have yet to confirm the exact cause. Residents reported hearing a loud blast moments before flames spread across the building.

Local resident Rohit stated that the fire escalated so rapidly that people had no time to react. Despite efforts by locals to assist in the rescue, thick smoke and intense heat hindered access.

Forensic teams and fire department officials have initiated a detailed investigation into the incident. Authorities are also examining whether lapses in fire safety compliance or building regulations contributed to the high casualty count.
