Severe Heatwave in North Karnataka Triggers Deaths, Water Shortage and Animal Distress, Authorities Issue Health Advisory

Bengaluru: Karnataka is reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring beyond 40°C across several parts of North Karnataka, triggering a severe humanitarian and environmental crisis. Districts like Koppal, Gadag, Raichur, Bidar and Bagalkot are among the worst affected, as both humans and animals struggle to cope with extreme conditions.

The relentless heat has led to acute water shortages, with lakes drying up and groundwater levels plunging. In rural areas, thousands of animals are facing dehydration, while reports indicate that cattle are starving due to lack of fodder and water, particularly in Koppal district.

Deaths Reported, Health Risks Escalate
Authorities confirmed that at least two people have died due to heat-related causes in Raichur, raising alarm over the growing impact of the heatwave. The district administration has intensified monitoring of vulnerable groups, including patients suffering from heart disease, cancer, blood pressure, and diabetes.

“People are strictly advised to avoid stepping out between 11 am and 4 pm to prevent heat-related illnesses,” officials said.

Water Crisis Deepens, Demand for Cooling Solutions Surges
In Gadag and surrounding regions, dried-up lakes have worsened the drinking water crisis, forcing residents to struggle for daily needs. Meanwhile, demand for air coolers has surged in Bidar, while traditional clay pots are witnessing high sales in Bagalkot as people seek relief from the scorching temperatures.

Health Department Issues Advisory
The health department has urged citizens to take maximum precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure, and monitoring symptoms of heatstroke. Emergency preparedness measures are also being reviewed in vulnerable districts.
