Pre-monsoon storms leave houses damaged and residents injured in Karkala taluk

Udupi: More than 20 houses were damaged in Karnataka’s Karkala taluk after strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning accompanied pre-monsoon rains over the past few days, officials said on Friday.

The severe weather conditions have caused widespread damage to residential properties and horticulture crops across several villages in the taluk, raising concerns among residents ahead of the monsoon season.

According to local authorities, the region has been witnessing continuous strong winds and thunderstorms for the last three to four days. Though rainfall levels have reportedly remained lower compared to previous years, the intensity of the winds has caused significant destruction.

Jaya Salian sustained serious injuries after reportedly being struck on the head by lightning during the storm. The victim has been admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru for treatment, officials confirmed.

Authorities estimated that Jaya Salian’s house alone suffered property damage worth nearly ₹50,000 due to the lightning strike.

Several villages report property losses

Officials said multiple houses across villages in Karkala taluk sustained partial damage because of the severe weather conditions.

The house of Sundar Poojary in Edu village was partially damaged after being hit by lightning.

Similarly, property losses worth approximately ₹35,000 were reported at the residence of Mahesh in Palli village, while Sujatha Serigarthi from Mudradi village reportedly suffered losses estimated at ₹30,000.

Revenue officials stated that damage assessment surveys are currently underway in the affected areas.

Authorities monitor pre-monsoon weather impact

The local administration has been monitoring the impact of the pre-monsoon weather system as strong winds continue to affect several parts of coastal Karnataka.

Officials have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid standing near electric poles, trees or open fields during lightning activity.
