Tegucigalpa: Honduras has officially designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Hamas as terrorist organisations, marking a significant diplomatic and security policy decision by the Central American nation.
The announcement was made through a statement issued by Honduras’ Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, which said the move reflects the country’s firm opposition to terrorism and terror financing in all forms.
According to the statement, the decision reinforces Honduras’ commitment to strengthening international cooperation aimed at preventing and combating terrorism-related threats worldwide.
The order was reportedly issued under the direction of Honduran President Nasry Juan Asfura.
Honduras strengthens global anti-terror position
Officials stated that the designation aligns Honduras with several countries that have adopted stricter measures against organisations accused of supporting or engaging in militant activities.
The Honduran government emphasised that the decision is part of broader efforts to enhance international security cooperation and reinforce global counter-terrorism frameworks.
With the latest move, Honduras has become the 46th country globally to formally classify the IRGC as a terrorist organisation.
Israel welcomes Honduras’ decision
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar welcomed the announcement and praised the Honduran leadership for taking what he described as a principled stand against terrorism.
“I commend Honduran President Nasry Asfura for his decision to declare Hamas and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as terrorist organizations,” Gideon Sa’ar stated.
The declaration is expected to strengthen diplomatic ties between Honduras and Israel while also contributing to broader international discussions surrounding terrorism, regional security and geopolitical alliances.
The IRGC, a powerful branch of Iran’s armed forces, has faced sanctions and terror-related designations from several Western and allied nations over allegations linked to regional militant activities and security threats.
