A 42-year-old man narrowly escaped death after a crocodile attacked him near the Kali River in Dandeli, with locals blaming poor public sanitation facilities for the shocking incident
Dandeli: In a shocking incident from Dandeli in Uttara Kannada, a man suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a crocodile near the banks of the Kali River, triggering outrage among residents over the poor maintenance of public sanitation facilities.
The victim has been identified as Anand Mannavaddar (42), a resident of Kulgi area in Dandeli.
According to local sources, Anand had gone near the riverbank on Kulgi Road due to the lack of properly maintained public toilets in the area. While he was near the riverbank, a crocodile suddenly emerged from the water and attacked him.
The unexpected attack created panic, and Anand reportedly screamed for help as the animal dragged and injured him.
Hearing his cries, local residents rushed to the spot and managed to scare the crocodile away, preventing what could have turned into a fatal tragedy.
Victim Under Treatment
After the rescue, Anand was immediately shifted to a hospital in Dandeli city, where he is currently undergoing treatment for serious injuries sustained during the attack.
Doctors said he suffered multiple injuries to different parts of his body but is now out of immediate danger.
Locals Blame Civic Neglect
The incident has triggered anger among local residents, who claim the tragedy could have been avoided if public toilets in the area had been properly maintained.
Residents alleged that due to neglected sanitation infrastructure, many people are forced to use open areas near the riverbank, increasing the risk of wildlife encounters.
“People are risking their lives because basic public facilities are not functioning properly.”
Locals are now demanding immediate action from district authorities, restoration of public sanitation facilities, and stronger safety measures near crocodile-prone river zones.
