Fuel shortage and soaring commercial LPG prices push hundreds of Peenya industries toward shutdown risk

Bengaluru: A growing global geopolitical crisis is now directly impacting Bengaluru’s industrial economy, as Peenya Industrial Area, one of South Asia’s largest manufacturing hubs, faces a major commercial LPG supply disruption. The supply crisis, reportedly linked to instability caused by the Middle East conflict, has triggered a sharp rise in fuel prices and placed hundreds of small and medium industries under extreme financial pressure.

According to industrial stakeholders, government-supplied commercial gas cylinders have completely stopped reaching several manufacturing units, forcing business owners to rely on private distributors. However, with private suppliers charging nearly double the regular price, production costs have surged beyond manageable levels.

Industry representatives warn that more than 400 small-scale units are now on the verge of shutdown, raising fears of a large-scale employment crisis in Bengaluru’s manufacturing belt.

Gas Supply Crisis Disrupts Production in Peenya
Several industrial units in Peenya, including metal cutting units, fabrication workshops, component manufacturing plants, and engineering-based businesses, depend heavily on commercial LPG for daily operations. Over the last few days, irregular fuel availability has severely affected production schedules.
Factory owners say that without immediate intervention, production losses may escalate, contracts may be delayed, and long-term business sustainability could be threatened.
Association Writes to State and Central Governments
The Peenya Industrial Association has reportedly approached both the state and central governments, demanding urgent action to restore regular LPG supply.

With nearly 12,000 industrial units operating in Peenya, industry leaders argue that commercial LPG remains a critical operational requirement for thousands of companies.
“Commercial gas supply must be resumed immediately. Industries need a separate pricing mechanism and uninterrupted fuel access to survive this crisis,” said association president Danappa, while appealing to authorities.
Thousands of Workers Face Uncertainty
The crisis is no longer limited to industrial owners. With production slowing down across multiple sectors, thousands of workers employed in Peenya’s manufacturing ecosystem are facing uncertainty over job security.
If the fuel shortage continues, experts warn that layoffs, reduced shifts, and temporary closures may become unavoidable.
Peenya has long been considered the backbone of Bengaluru’s industrial output. The current LPG crisis highlights how global conflicts are now creating direct economic pressure on local manufacturing ecosystems, threatening both industrial productivity and employment stability.
