Bengaluru: With Valentine’s Day just a day away, flower markets across the city are witnessing an unprecedented surge in demand for red roses, resulting in a sharp spike in wholesale and retail prices. Traders say festive buying, combined with the ongoing wedding season has created intense pressure on supply, pushing rates to double and even triple compared to normal days.

According to wholesalers, the price of a single rose, which usually ranges between ₹16 and ₹20, has increased to ₹20–₹30 during Valentine’s week. Retail prices have seen an even steeper jump, rising from the usual ₹20–₹30 per flower to ₹50–₹80. In high-demand localities, a single red rose is being sold for as much as ₹80–₹120.

Bouquet Prices Witness Sharp Rise

The surge is not limited to single flowers. Bouquet prices have also climbed significantly. A bouquet of 10 roses, earlier priced between ₹200 and ₹350, is now being sold for ₹500–₹800. Similarly, a 20-rose bouquet that previously cost ₹350–₹500 is currently priced at ₹800–₹1,100, depending on quality and location.

Traders attribute the price hike primarily to increased demand ahead of Valentine’s Day, coupled with bulk purchases for wedding celebrations.

“Despite higher prices, customers are willingly paying to ensure their Valentine’s Day gifting plans are not disrupted,” a flower trader said.

Supply Constraints Add to Price Pressure

Market sources say reduced flower arrivals from neighbouring states have tightened availability, while higher online bookings have further strained retail stocks. The combined effect of limited supply and heavy demand has led to a significant escalation in prices.

Despite the steep rates, sales volumes remain robust, with retailers reporting strong footfall and advance orders. Flower growers, meanwhile, are benefiting from improved returns during the festive rush.

On the Other hand, some consumers have expressed concern over inflated seasonal pricing, though traders maintain that the surge is driven purely by market demand and limited supply.
