State-run oil companies raise petrol and diesel prices by nearly Rs. 3 per litre nationwide, impacting household budgets, transport costs, and inflation outlook across major cities

New Delhi: In a major blow to household budgets and transportation costs, India has witnessed a fresh fuel price hike as state-run oil marketing companies increased petrol and diesel prices by nearly Rs. 3 per litre with immediate effect on Friday.

This marks the first nationwide fuel price revision in nearly four years, ending a prolonged freeze in retail fuel prices maintained since 2022.

According to oil company data, petrol in Delhi has increased from Rs. 94.77 to Rs. 97.77 per litre, while diesel now costs Rs. 90.67 per litre, up by Rs. 3. The hike has been implemented across India, with final pump prices varying based on state taxes and dealer commissions.

Bengaluru Fuel Prices Cross Key Mark
In Bengaluru, the latest revision has pushed fuel prices significantly higher:
  • Petrol: Rs. 102.90 → Rs. 106.17 per litre
  • Diesel: Rs. 90.98 → Rs. 94.10 per litre
The increase has sparked concern among daily commuters, cab operators, delivery workers, and businesses dependent on transportation.

Fuel Prices in Major Indian Cities
The revised fuel rates in major cities now stand at:
  1. Mumbai: Petrol Rs. 106.68 | Diesel Rs. 93.14
  2. Kolkata: Petrol Rs. 108.74 | Diesel Rs. 95.13
  3. Chennai: Petrol Rs. 103.67 | Diesel Rs. 95.25
Oil companies said the price correction became necessary amid continued pressure from rising global crude prices and supply uncertainty in West Asia.

Why Are Fuel Prices Rising Now?
Industry experts say global crude oil prices surged sharply in recent weeks due to geopolitical tensions in energy supply routes, creating heavy under-recoveries for Indian public-sector oil retailers.

Despite absorbing losses for weeks, companies reportedly decided to pass on part of the burden to consumers.
“This is only a partial adjustment against rising global input costs,” market sources indicated after the announcement.
The fuel hike is expected to impact transport fares, food delivery charges, logistics, and overall inflation, with economists watching for its broader effect on consumer spending in the coming weeks.
