Top court questions jail conditions, directs detailed status report on trial progress and facilities for actor Darshan within a week

Bengaluru: The Supreme Court of India on Monday directed authorities to submit a detailed report within one week while hearing the bail plea of Kannada actor Darshan, an accused in the Renukaswamy murder case. The court sought clarity on jail conditions, trial progress, and alleged delays in witness examination.

The matter was heard by a bench comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice Vijay Bishnoi, with senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi appearing on behalf of Darshan.

Supreme Court Notice in Darshan Bail Plea Hearing

During the proceedings, the apex court issued a notice to the state government, raising concerns over the treatment of the accused in prison. The bench observed that while authorities had emphasized denying preferential treatment, basic facilities must still be ensured.

“You said not to give five-star treatment to the accused, but are even basic facilities being provided?” the court questioned during the hearing.

The court directed the concerned trial court, identified as the 57th CCH Court, to furnish a comprehensive report on the status of the case and prison conditions.

Renukaswamy Murder Case Trial Progress Under Scrutiny

The Supreme Court has specifically sought details regarding the progress of the trial, including the number of witnesses examined so far and those yet to be examined. It has also asked for an estimated timeline required to complete the recording of evidence.

The directive aims to assess whether delays in the judicial process are impacting the accused’s rights, a key argument raised in the bail plea.

Allegations of Discrimination and Inhumane Jail Conditions

In his bail application, Darshan alleged discrimination and inhumane treatment inside Parappana Agrahara Central Prison. He claimed that he was being subjected to threats, abuse, and mental harassment by fellow inmates.

The plea further stated that he had been kept in a quarantine cell allegedly in violation of prison rules, leading to both physical and psychological distress.

Claims of Restricted Family Access and Medical Neglect

Darshan also alleged that he was not being granted equal opportunities to meet family members and was restricted to limited movement within the prison corridor. The application highlighted concerns over inadequate medical care, including lack of proper physiotherapy despite reported back pain.

Additionally, the actor argued that prolonged incarceration and negative media coverage were affecting his professional life and reputation, potentially infringing upon his fundamental right to pursue a livelihood.

Next Hearing After Submission of Court-Ordered Report

The Supreme Court has scheduled the next hearing after receiving the report from the trial court. The findings are expected to play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the bail plea.
