From Assam to Kerala, senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge faces mounting criticism over remarks targeting the BJP, RSS, and regional sentiments.

Bengaluru: Senior Congress leader and AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge has found himself at the centre of multiple controversies, as a series of his recent statements have sparked sharp political backlash across the country. Known for his decades-long experience in politics, Kharge’s remarks in recent rallies have ignited debates over the tone and content of political discourse.

The latest controversy erupted after Kharge’s speech in Nilambazar, Assam, where he reportedly drew a comparison involving religious context and political organisations. Referring to teachings from the Quran, he stated that even a venomous snake must be killed if it appears during prayer, and likened Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and BJP to such a threat, suggesting strong opposition. The remark triggered immediate outrage from leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party, who accused him of using inflammatory language.

‘Gujarati People Illiterate’ Remark Draws Criticism
In another instance, during a rally in Kerala’s Idukki, Kharge allegedly stated that people of Gujarat are “illiterate” and easily misled, while praising Kerala’s population as more aware and educated. The comment drew widespread criticism, forcing Kharge to later issue a clarification.
“My remarks were misinterpreted. I express my heartfelt regret. I have great respect for the people of Gujarat,” Kharge said in response to the backlash.
Earlier ‘Poisonous Snake’ Remark Against PM Modi
Kharge has previously stirred controversy during the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections. Addressing a rally in Naregal, Gadag district, he compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a “poisonous snake”, stating that even touching such a snake could be fatal. The statement triggered a massive political storm, with Modi later responding that he would prefer to be “a snake around Lord Shiva’s neck”, turning the remark into a national talking point.

Political Reactions Intensify
The series of remarks has intensified political tensions between Congress and BJP, with leaders from the ruling party accusing Kharge of lowering the level of political debate. Congress leaders, however, have defended him, claiming his statements are being taken out of context.

Debate Over Political Language Rekindled
Kharge’s comments have reignited discussions on the use of language in Indian politics, especially when senior leaders make sharp or metaphorical statements. Analysts believe such controversies could impact public perception ahead of key elections.

A Pattern or Political Strategy?
With multiple controversial statements surfacing in quick succession, questions are now being raised about whether this is a pattern of aggressive political rhetoric or simply remarks made in the heat of campaigning.
