Background of the Mangaluru Woman Murder Case

The Mangaluru woman murder case began on the evening of July 16, when 21-year-old Lavanya, a resident of Kakkepadavu and an employee at a private nursing home in Kalladka, was allegedly attacked at the B.C. Road KSRTC bus stand in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

According to the police investigation, the accused, Chethan, who is reportedly a distant relative of the victim, had allegedly been pursuing Lavanya despite her refusal of his advances. On the day of the incident, both boarded the same KSRTC bus travelling from Bantwal to Kakkepadavu. Police said Lavanya became uncomfortable after the accused sat beside her and reportedly informed a relative over the phone about his presence before the call was disconnected.

After getting off the bus at the B.C. Road bus stand, investigators allege that Chethan chased Lavanya and attacked her with a talwar (sword) when she attempted to flee. She sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Bantwal Taluk Hospital, where she later succumbed despite treatment.

Police launched an intensive manhunt after the attack. Investigators said the accused fled in an Alto car towards Mangaluru and allegedly called Lavanya's father, claiming responsibility for the killing. Using CCTV footage, mobile network analysis and technical surveillance, police tracked and arrested Chethan near Pacchanadi in Vamanjoor within hours of the incident.

During the investigation, police also found that the accused had allegedly visited the private hospital where Lavanya worked about a month before the murder and created a disturbance. Authorities are now examining whether that earlier incident had been officially reported and if preventive action could have been taken.

The case remains under investigation, with police collecting witness statements, forensic evidence and other material before filing the charge sheet.
