Over 68% turnout recorded in Davanagere South and Bagalkote as allegations of money and ‘chicken for votes’ spark controversy
Bengaluru: The high-stakes by-elections in Karnataka’s Davanagere South and Bagalkote Assembly constituencies concluded on Thursday, with an impressive voter turnout and intense political drama. With polling now complete, the fate of candidates has been sealed in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and results are set to be declared on May 4.
The election process witnessed active participation from voters, reflecting strong public interest in the outcome.
Davanagere South recorded 68.55% voter turnout, while Bagalkote saw a slightly higher turnout of 68.73%, indicating a closely fought electoral battle.
Cash-for-Votes Allegations Rock Polling
Even as voting progressed, serious allegations of voter bribery surfaced from multiple locations, casting a shadow over the electoral process.
In Bagalkote’s Rajiv Gandhi Colony, a viral video allegedly showed an individual distributing money to voters. A case has been registered at Navanagar Police Station. In another instance, a woman from Vambe Colony publicly displayed Rs500, claiming it was given by Congress workers, triggering widespread debate.
Political Clash Over Distribution Claims
Tensions escalated further in Hale Pete, where BJP workers reportedly locked Congress workers inside a house while accusing them of distributing cash. However, the accused allegedly escaped through a back door, adding to the political drama.
‘Chicken for Votes’ Claim in Davanagere
In Davanagere, allegations took a bizarre turn as claims emerged that voters were being lured with chickens. A video shared by BJP leader Vinay Kumar showed children alleging that Congress workers distributed chickens in exchange for votes.
Additionally, another viral clip from SPS Nagar allegedly showed money being distributed, intensifying scrutiny.
All Eyes on May 4 Results
Amid fierce campaigning, controversies, and tight competition, both constituencies now await the final verdict. With the political stakes high, the results on May 4 are expected to have significant implications for the state’s political landscape.
The bypolls have not only showcased voter enthusiasm but also highlighted ongoing concerns over electoral ethics and malpractice.
