US President accuses Iran of violating the ceasefire by charging tanker fees, sparking fears of global oil supply disruption
Washington: A fresh geopolitical flashpoint has emerged around the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, as Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on Iran over reports of imposing fees on oil tankers passing through the vital shipping route.
Just days after a fragile two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, tensions have resurfaced with allegations that Iran is charging fees on oil tankers navigating the Hormuz Strait. The move has triggered strong reactions from Washington, which sees it as a violation of the agreement.
Trump Issues Strong Warning
Reacting to the reports, Trump expressed outrage, calling Iran’s actions “unacceptable” and cautioning Tehran against continuing such practices.
“If Iran is charging tanker fees, they must stop immediately. It would be better for them,” Trump warned.
He further accused Iran of breaching ceasefire terms, stating that such behavior undermines diplomatic efforts and global stability.
Strategic Lifeline of Global Oil at Risk
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow 167-kilometre passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints. Any disruption in this route can have immediate consequences on global oil prices and supply chains.
According to reports, only a limited number of tankers have passed through the strait since the ceasefire, raising concerns that Iran may be deliberately restricting movement or imposing unofficial charges.
US Sends Diplomatic Team to Defuse Crisis
In a bid to ease escalating tensions, the United States is dispatching a high-level diplomatic delegation for talks with Iranian officials in Islamabad. The team will be led by Vice President JD Vance and includes key figures like Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
The talks aim to address concerns over maritime security and restore confidence in the ceasefire agreement.
Lebanon Factor Complicates Talks
The situation is further complicated by Iran’s insistence on including Lebanon-related conditions in the peace framework. Recent strikes by Israel in Lebanon have added tension, making negotiations more complex.
Global Economic Impact Looms
With rising military rhetoric and diplomatic uncertainty, fears are mounting that any disruption in the Hormuz Strait could trigger a sharp spike in global oil prices, affecting economies worldwide.
