Former MLA alleges political interference in resort approval; announces indefinite protest from Monday, calls it a fight for personal rights

Udupi: A major political confrontation has erupted in Udupi as former MLA Raghupathi Bhat has levelled serious allegations against sitting MLA Yashpal Suvarna, accusing him of deliberately blocking a private resort project.

Raghupathi Bhat claimed that his application for a single-layout resort project in Badanidiyoor village has been stuck for nearly two years, despite being submitted in March 2024. He alleged that officials are not granting approval due to pressure from the sitting MLA, calling it a clear case of political obstruction.

“Approval Delayed Despite Clearances”
According to Bhat, all necessary permissions including CRZ clearance, zone change, and commercial conversion have already been secured. However, the proposal remains pending at the Urban Development Authority level.
“Even after High Court directions to act within 30 days, no action has been taken. This delay is unjustified,” Bhat said.
Indefinite Protest Announced
In protest against the alleged injustice, Bhat has announced an indefinite dharna (sit-in protest) starting Monday in front of the Urban Development Authority office.
Clarifying his stance, Bhat stated that this is not a political battle but a fight for his personal rights. He emphasized that such political hostility affecting private ventures is unprecedented in Udupi.
Emotional Remark on Political Fallout
Expressing disappointment, Bhat said he had once supported Yashpal Suvarna’s political rise, but is now facing hurdles from the same leadership.
