Fatal crash near Rani Cross exposes navigation errors, alleged overspeeding, and raises serious safety concerns on airport service roads

Devanahalli:  In a tragic late-night accident near Rani Cross on the outskirts of Devanahalli, three women lost their lives on the spot after a speeding lorry rammed into a tourist tempo traveller (TT) vehicle. The devastating collision has once again highlighted the growing concerns over road safety and navigation mishaps near airport corridors.

Three Women Killed Instantly in High-Impact Collision
The deceased have been identified as Jayamma (60), Yashodamma (60), and Ganga (38). All three were seated on the left side of the TT vehicle, which bore the brunt of the impact. The force of the collision completely crushed that side, leaving no chance of survival for the victims.

Multiple Injuries, One Critical Shifted to Bengaluru
A total of eight passengers, including the TT driver, sustained injuries in the accident. The injured were immediately rushed to a private hospital in Devanahalli. Among them, Kempamma is reported to be in critical condition and has been shifted to a hospital in Bengaluru for advanced treatment.

Pilgrimage Trip Turns Fatal Before Takeoff
The victims were part of a group of 12 individuals from the same locality who had planned a 15-day pilgrimage to Kashi. The group had booked tickets through a Stree Shakti Sangathan initiative and were scheduled to board a 6 am flight. They had departed from Tiptur around 10 pm in the TT vehicle, heading towards Kempegowda International Airport.

Navigation Error and U-Turn Prove Fatal
Preliminary reports suggest that the driver, unfamiliar with the route, was relying on Google Maps for navigation. Just before the accident site, there was a designated turning on the service road. However, the driver reportedly missed it and proceeded ahead, attempting a U-turn at the next available point. It was during this maneuver that the TT vehicle moved towards the center line, leading to a catastrophic collision with an oncoming lorry.

Police Point to Overspeeding, Lorry Driver Absconding
Traffic Division ACP Pradeep confirmed that the accident likely occurred due to overspeeding and sudden lane deviation.

“The TT vehicle missed the designated turn while following Google Maps and moved towards the center line. The lorry collided at high speed. Overspeeding is suspected. The lorry driver fled the scene immediately after the crash,” he said.

Authorities have launched a case and initiated an investigation. Efforts are underway to trace the absconding lorry driver.

Rising Concerns Over Airport Road Safety
This incident has raised serious questions about road signage, service road design, and dependency on navigation apps, especially for drivers unfamiliar with airport routes. Locals have demanded improved traffic management and clearer directions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
