Thiruvananthapuram: A 20-year-old woman has been taken into custody after a premature baby was found in a washroom at SAT Hospital on Sunday night.
According to police, the woman, a resident of Thiruvallam, had arrived at the hospital after reportedly consuming medication intended to terminate her pregnancy. While at the hospital, she experienced bleeding and entered a washroom, where she delivered a premature baby.
Hospital staff later noticed bloodstains on the woman's clothes after she came out of the washroom. When questioned, she disclosed the incident, following which the hospital authorities informed the police.
Police have taken the woman into custody and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the premature delivery.
Premature Baby Recovered During Rescue Operation
Following the information provided by hospital authorities, police and emergency personnel initiated a search operation.
The Fire and Rescue Services recovered the premature baby from the hospital's drainage system after opening the septic tank, according to officials.
The body has been sent for further medico-legal procedures, and investigators are awaiting the findings of the post-mortem examination.
Police Investigating Circumstances of the Incident
Police said the woman is unmarried and is currently being questioned as part of the investigation.
Officials are verifying the sequence of events, including the reported use of medication before she arrived at the hospital. Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the ongoing inquiry.
The investigation will also determine whether any additional offences are made out based on medical evidence and forensic findings.
Police said further action will be based on the investigation and medical examination reports.
Separate Case: 1995 Hit-and-Run Accused Arrested
In a separate development, police arrested a man who had been absconding for nearly 30 years in connection with a 1995 fatal road accident in Alathur, Kerala.
The accused, identified as Ilanthamizhan Paramasivam, a native of Tamil Nadu, was wanted in connection with the death of six-year-old Umar Farooq, who was fatally hit by a lorry while returning from a madrasa on December 12, 1995.
According to police, the accused was released on bail after the incident but failed to appear before the court during subsequent proceedings. He was later declared a proclaimed offender.
The Kerala Police traced and arrested him in Chennai before producing him before the Alathur Court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
