Thousands of students marched towards the Jharkhand Assembly in Ranchi over alleged JPSC and JSSC exam irregularities, with police using water cannons.
Ranchi: Thousands of students protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) marched towards the Jharkhand Assembly in Ranchi on Monday.
The protest, organised under the ‘Vidhan Sabha Gherao’ programme, saw student protesters move towards the New Assembly building while seeking action on their demands concerning recruitment examinations.
The situation intensified after some protesters crossed police barricades. Security personnel used water cannons to disperse the protesters as the march continued.
A protester was also seen climbing onto a police barricade during the demonstration as JPSC and JSSC aspirants continued their march.
JPSC JSSC Protest Moves Towards Jharkhand Assembly
The protesters are seeking action over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by JPSC and JSSC.
Student leaders said the issues concern the recruitment opportunities of students across Jharkhand and called for their demands to be addressed.
Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto said he would continue to participate in the protest despite his health condition.
“My health is not more important than the future of the students,” Devendra Nath Mahto said.
Mahto said the situation concerning students was affecting the prospects of a large number of aspirants.
He said his health condition was weak but added that he considered the concerns of students to be more important.
Jharkhand Police Use Water Cannons on Protesters
The Assembly march intensified after protesters broke through police barricades placed along the route.
Police personnel then used water cannons to disperse the demonstrators. Visuals from the protest showed students gathering near the barricades and security personnel attempting to control the movement towards the Assembly.
The protest formed part of the students’ campaign over the issues they have raised concerning JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations.
The demonstration also included a hunger strike launched by student leaders.
Student Hunger Strike to Continue Over JPSC JSSC Demands
Mahto said the hunger strike would continue until the protesters’ demands were addressed.
He said the future of students was being affected and alleged that opportunities for lakhs of students were being compromised.

The student leaders have maintained that the government should respond to their concerns regarding recruitment examinations and take steps on the issues raised by the aspirants.
Amit Malviya Reacts to Jharkhand Police Action
BJP leader Amit Malviya also commented on the police action through a post on X. Malviya questioned the use of force against the protesting students and referred to the police response during the demonstration. He also questioned whether opposition leaders and civil society voices would comment on the action taken by Jharkhand Police.
In his post, Malviya referred to police personnel carrying riot-control equipment and questioned the use of such equipment during the student protest.
The political reaction came as the student-led demonstration continued in Ranchi over the JPSC and JSSC recruitment examination issues.
The protest remains centred on the students’ demands concerning recruitment examinations, while the use of water cannons has added a law-and-order dimension to the Assembly march.
