Bengaluru: Bengaluru South Municipal Corporation has launched a pilot project to install GPS tracking systems on door-to-door garbage collection autos in the Bommanahalli zone to improve monitoring and transparency in waste management.
Municipal Commissioner K.N. Ramesh and Bommanahalli Assembly constituency MLA Satish Reddy launched the GPS tracking system at a programme held at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium in HSR Layout on Friday.
The project has been taken up jointly by the corporation, Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML), Last Be the Change NGO and Intel.
GPS Tracking Introduced on Bengaluru Garbage Autos
There are around 208 waste collection vehicles operating in the Bommanahalli zone. As part of the pilot project, GPS tracking systems have initially been installed on 36 garbage collection autos operating in HSR Layout.
The system will allow authorities to monitor the movement of garbage collection vehicles and their operations.
According to Commissioner K.N. Ramesh, the pilot project will continue in Bommanahalli for eight months. If the trial is successful, the GPS-based monitoring system will be extended to other areas under the Bengaluru South Municipal Corporation.
Bengaluru Garbage Collection to Get Real-Time Monitoring
The GPS system will provide real-time information related to garbage collection auto operations. Authorities will be able to track the current location of vehicles, their movement on designated roads and the time spent during collection activities.
The system is also intended to support daily monitoring of waste management operations and provide officials with information on the movement of garbage collection autos.
The corporation will assess the results of the eight-month pilot before deciding on its wider implementation.
Sevak Technology to Track Waste Segregation
The GPS system will also be used along with Sevak technology to monitor waste collection and segregation at individual households. The system will record information related to the weight and segregation of garbage collected from houses.
Residents who segregate waste correctly and hand it over to collection autos will receive a rating between zero and five stars through the system. The technology will also provide marshals with data to identify households that do not regularly hand over waste for collection.
Officials can use the information to identify such households and impose fines where applicable.
Commissioner Calls for Waste Segregation at Source
Commissioner K.N. Ramesh said public participation is necessary to improve waste management in Bengaluru. He said separating wet and dry waste at the source and handing it over to garbage collection autos would address a substantial part of the city's waste management problem.
The Commissioner also stressed the need for residents to prevent waste from being dumped into drains. The corporation is seeking to use technology alongside public participation to improve household-level waste segregation and garbage collection.
Satish Reddy Seeks Filling of Civic Worker Vacancies
Speaking at the programme, Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy said technology can help improve transparency in garbage collection and reduce allegations and counter-allegations related to the service.
He also requested the Commissioner to take steps to fill vacant civic worker positions. Satish Reddy sought the appointment of personnel against vacancies created after civic workers left service or died.
Stadium Development Works Inspected
Following the GPS tracking programme, Commissioner K.N. Ramesh and the MLAs inspected development works at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium.
Following a request from the MLAs, the Commissioner directed officials to provide adequate security around the outer areas of the stadium to prevent illegal activities.
Bommanahalli Zone Joint Commissioner Satish Babu, Intel Senior Director Manas, BSWML Chief Executive Officer Ramamani and other officials were present during the programme.
