Bengaluru: Two workers died after soil collapsed during underpass construction near Kanteerava Studio in Bengaluru on Tuesday. The incident occurred near the road in front of Kanteerava Studio and close to Dr Rajkumar Memorial, where underpass-related work was underway.
According to police, workers had excavated the road to a depth of around 20 feet for the construction work. Five workers were present at the site when soil from the side of the excavation suddenly collapsed.
Three workers managed to move away from the area, while two were trapped beneath the soil.
Kanteerava Studio Underpass Work Turns Fatal
The workers were reportedly carrying out work related to the underpass when the soil retaining section suddenly gave way.
According to preliminary information, water accumulated inside the excavation had been pumped out as part of preparations for RCC work. The soil reportedly collapsed while the water was being removed.
Rescue efforts began immediately after the incident, with workers and members of the public helping those trapped beneath the soil.
One of the trapped workers died at the site, while another was pulled out and taken to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Two Workers Dead in Bengaluru Soil Collapse
The deceased workers have been identified as Parimal, 31, and Sonaram, 26. Parimal reportedly remained trapped beneath the soil and died at the spot.
Sonaram was rescued from the excavation and shifted to Kanva Hospital for treatment. He later died while undergoing treatment, according to the information available.
Three other workers, Sadanand, Sunil and Imtiyaz sustained injuries in the incident and were taken for medical treatment. The workers are reportedly from Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Fire and Police Teams Launch Rescue Operation
Following information about the soil collapse, police and additional fire and emergency personnel reached the location.
Rescue teams initially worked to determine whether any other workers were trapped beneath the collapsed soil.
The operation involved removing the soil from the excavation and checking the area for trapped workers. The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Nandini Layout Police Station.
BDA Project Under Investigation
The underpass-related work was reportedly being carried out by the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) near FTI Circle.
North Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Nemagowda said five workers were working at the site when the soil collapsed.
“Five workers were working when the soil collapsed. Two workers were trapped. One was rescued and taken to hospital, where he died.”
According to the police, one worker was still trapped beneath the soil during the initial rescue operation, and efforts were underway to recover the body.
Police are also examining the circumstances under which the excavation was carried out and the safety arrangements at the construction site.
Safety Measures at Construction Site Under Review
The excavation had reportedly reached around 20 feet in depth for the underpass work. The sudden collapse has raised questions about the stability of the soil and safety measures followed during the construction activity.
Police officials said they were verifying the details of the project and the agency responsible for the work. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
