Wayanad: A health scare has gripped Kerala's Wayanad district after nearly 150 students of an aided upper primary school reported symptoms of fever and vomiting over the past three days. Health authorities have admitted 38 children to the hospital while assuring parents that the situation remains under control.
The affected students belong to Mar Baselios Aided Upper Primary School in Koilady. Officials said medical teams have been closely monitoring the children and taking preventive measures to contain the situation.
Wayanad School Students Under Medical Observation
According to health department officials, the students began experiencing fever and vomiting in the last few days, prompting immediate medical intervention.
Of the nearly 150 children undergoing treatment, 38 students who continued to experience discomfort were admitted to the Bathery Taluk Hospital for further observation and care.
Authorities clarified that the hospitalisations were primarily precautionary and aimed at ensuring the children received timely medical attention.
Despite the sudden rise in cases, officials said that most students have shown stable conditions and are responding well to treatment.
District Medical Officer Assures Situation Is Under Control
The District Medical Officer (DMO) urged parents and the public not to panic, stating that there is currently no indication of a major outbreak.
According to the DMO, health officials are conducting detailed assessments to determine the possible cause of the symptoms while simultaneously strengthening preventive measures.
As an immediate precaution, authorities have declared a one-week holiday for Mar Baselios Aided Upper Primary School to prevent further spread of illness and allow health teams to complete inspections.
"There is currently no need to be worried. As a precautionary measure, a week-long holiday has been declared for the school," the District Medical Officer said.
Health Teams Intensify Investigation in Wayanad
Medical experts are examining possible factors that may have contributed to the illnesses, including food safety, drinking water quality and the potential spread of infectious diseases.
Samples are expected to be collected and tested as part of the investigation to identify the exact cause behind the symptoms affecting the students.
Health officials have also advised parents to closely monitor children for signs of fever, vomiting or dehydration and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
Kerala School Health Incident Raises Safety Concerns
The incident has raised concerns among parents and local residents regarding health and hygiene standards in educational institutions.
Officials, however, reiterated that the situation remains manageable and that the declaration of a temporary holiday is a preventive measure rather than an indication of a severe public health emergency.
Further updates are expected once medical investigations and laboratory analyses are completed.
