Heavy rainfall disrupts Bengaluru while IMD forecasts intensified monsoon activity across coastal, Malnad and interior Karnataka till June 11

Bengaluru: A sudden spell of torrential rain brought parts of Bengaluru to a standstill on Saturday afternoon, flooding roads, triggering traffic congestion, and disrupting normal life across several key localities. The downpour coincided with the strengthening southwest monsoon over Karnataka, prompting weather authorities to issue alerts for multiple regions of the state.

Several prominent areas in the city, including Malleswaram, Rajajinagar, Vijayanagar, Vasanth Nagar, Palace Guttahalli, Majestic, Cottonpet, Corporation Circle, Chikkapet and Gandhinagar, witnessed intense rainfall. Waterlogging was reported on numerous roads, leading to traffic snarls and slower movement of vehicles during the weekend rush.

“Heavy rain lashed major parts of Bengaluru within a short period, causing widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions across several busy corridors.”

Bengaluru Rain Causes Traffic Chaos Across Major Roads

The sudden downpour caught many residents off guard, particularly two-wheeler riders and pedestrians who scrambled for shelter under flyovers, bus stops and Metro stations. Traffic movement slowed considerably as vehicles lined up on major roads and junctions across the city.

In commercial hubs such as Chikkapet and the Majestic market area, roadside vendors faced difficulties safeguarding merchandise from rainwater. The unexpected weather conditions also affected shoppers and daily commuters navigating the crowded business districts.

Authorities monitored the situation as drainage systems struggled to cope with the sudden influx of rainwater in certain low-lying stretches.

Southwest Monsoon Advances Further Across Karnataka

The heavy rain in Bengaluru comes as the southwest monsoon continues to strengthen across Karnataka. According to a joint assessment by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) and the Meteorological Department, the monsoon has already advanced into large parts of Coastal Karnataka, Malnad and the southern interior region.

Weather officials indicated that conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to spread across the remaining parts of the state over the next two to three days. Forecast models suggest increased rainfall activity from June 6 to June 11 in several districts.

“The southwest monsoon has strengthened further over Karnataka, and rainfall activity is expected to intensify across multiple regions during the coming days.”

Orange Alert Issued for Coastal Karnataka

Meteorological authorities have forecast widespread moderate rainfall across Coastal Karnataka between June 6 and June 11. Heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.4 mm, along with very heavy rainfall between 115.5 mm and 204.4 mm, is likely at isolated locations.

Due to the possibility of intense rainfall, authorities have warned of flash floods in low-lying coastal areas and urban flooding in towns and cities. As a precautionary measure, an Orange Alert has been issued for coastal districts.

Residents living in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain vigilant and follow updates from local authorities.

Heavy Rain Forecast for Malnad Districts

The Malnad region is also expected to witness significant rainfall over the coming days. Districts such as Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Kodagu and Hassan are likely to receive moderate to heavy showers until June 11.

Weather experts have indicated that rainfall intensity could be particularly high between June 6 and June 10, increasing the risk of localized flooding, landslides in susceptible areas, and travel disruptions in hilly terrain.

North Interior Karnataka to Receive Thunderstorm Activity

Several districts in North Interior Karnataka are expected to receive widespread moderate rainfall beginning June 6. The forecast also indicates the possibility of heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms at isolated places through June 9.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during periods of severe weather.

Rain Likely to Continue in Bengaluru and South Interior Karnataka

The Meteorological Department has predicted scattered moderate rainfall across South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, over the next six days. The continuing monsoon activity is expected to bring intermittent showers to several districts in the region.

Officials noted that weather forecasts may be updated as atmospheric conditions evolve. Farmers, commuters and the general public have been urged to stay informed through official weather bulletins and take appropriate precautions against heavy rainfall and related hazards.

With the monsoon firmly establishing itself across Karnataka, authorities are closely monitoring rainfall patterns and preparedness measures as the state enters a period of heightened weather activity.
