Fresh LPG price revision raises household cooking gas costs as global energy market pressures continue to impact fuel pricing

New Delhi: In a fresh setback for household consumers, the price of domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders has been increased by Rs. 29 across the country. The revised rates came into effect on June 7, pushing up the cost of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi from ₹913 to ₹942.

The latest revision marks the second increase in domestic LPG prices within the last three months and comes amid continued volatility in global energy markets. Industry sources indicated that rising international fuel costs and supply concerns have contributed to the latest adjustment in cooking gas prices.

The increase is expected to impact millions of households already grappling with elevated living expenses, following recent increases in other fuel categories, including petrol, diesel and CNG.

“The latest LPG price revision has increased the cost of a 14.2 kg domestic cylinder in Delhi to ₹942 with effect from June 7.”

Domestic LPG Cylinder Price Hike Takes Effect Nationwide

Under the revised pricing structure, consumers will now pay ₹29 more for a domestic LPG cylinder. While the increase applies across the country, the final retail price will vary from city to city depending on state taxes, transportation charges and local levies.

The latest revision follows a previous increase of ₹60 per cylinder implemented on March 7. Industry officials said the recent hike only partially offsets the financial burden faced by oil marketing companies in supplying subsidised domestic cooking gas.

The development has once again brought LPG affordability into focus, particularly for middle-income and lower-income households that depend on cooking gas for daily needs.

Global Energy Crisis Behind Rising LPG Prices

Officials have linked the continued increase in LPG prices to ongoing uncertainty in global energy markets. Geopolitical tensions and conflicts affecting major oil and gas-producing regions have disrupted supply chains and placed upward pressure on international fuel prices.

The situation has increased procurement costs for energy-importing nations, including India, resulting in periodic revisions to domestic fuel prices.

According to industry experts, fluctuations in global crude oil and LPG benchmarks continue to influence domestic pricing decisions, despite government efforts to ensure adequate fuel availability.

“Global supply disruptions and higher international energy prices remain key factors driving fuel cost revisions.”

Government Highlights LPG Supply Measures

Speaking at an inter-ministerial press briefing, Sujata Sharma said the government has undertaken several initiatives to maintain adequate LPG supplies across the country.

These measures include enhancing domestic production capabilities and ensuring sufficient imports to meet growing consumer demand.

Officials reiterated that maintaining uninterrupted LPG availability remains a priority despite challenges arising from international market conditions.

Oil Companies Still Face Significant Under-Recoveries

Despite the latest price increase, government officials indicated that oil marketing companies continue to incur substantial losses on domestic LPG sales.

According to Sujata Sharma, the under-recovery on each domestic cooking gas cylinder remains close to ₹700. Under-recovery refers to the gap between the actual cost incurred by oil companies and the price at which LPG is sold to consumers.

The government and oil companies have been balancing consumer affordability concerns with rising procurement and distribution costs in a challenging global energy environment.

Consumers Brace for Higher Household Expenses

The latest LPG price hike is likely to increase monthly household expenditure for millions of families across India. Consumer groups have expressed concerns over the cumulative impact of rising fuel costs on household budgets.

As global energy markets remain volatile, industry observers will closely monitor future pricing decisions and any potential government measures aimed at cushioning consumers from further increases.

For now, consumers across the country will have to pay the revised rates for domestic LPG cylinders beginning June 7.
