Bengaluru East City Corporation removed over 100 tonnes of waste, planted saplings and imposed fines on plastic rule violators during its week-long Environment Day campaign

Bengaluru: Marking World Environment Day with an extensive civic initiative, the Bengaluru East City Corporation (BECC) launched a large-scale cleanliness and greening campaign across KR Puram and Doddanekkundi wards, clearing more than 100 tonnes of waste and construction debris from public spaces.

Led by BECC Commissioner D.S. Ramesh, the drive targeted long-neglected garbage hotspots and aimed to promote sustainable urban practices through waste management, plantation activities and strict enforcement against plastic violations.

The campaign has emerged as one of the most significant civic cleanliness efforts undertaken in the eastern parts of Bengaluru in recent times.

Bengaluru Cleanup Drive Removes Over 100 Tonnes of Waste
According to officials, more than 100 tonnes of garbage and construction debris were removed during the operation, while 18 identified black spots were completely cleaned and restored.
The intensive drive covered several public spaces, including Gangashetty Lake premises, government schools and colleges, government hospitals and other high-footfall locations.
Authorities also carried out cleaning activities on major roads, internal ward roads, road dividers, bus shelters, parks and pedestrian pathways to improve hygiene and urban aesthetics.

The initiative forms part of the corporation's broader effort to encourage public participation in maintaining a cleaner city.

1,600 Civic Workers and Heavy Machinery Deployed
To execute the massive operation, the corporation deployed around 1,600 personnel, including pourakarmikas, auto-tipper drivers, marshals and volunteers.

A fleet of heavy equipment was used to accelerate the waste disposal process. The operation involved:
  1. 14 tractors
  2. 6 tipper lorries
  3. 6 compactor vehicles
  4. 20 auto-tippers
  5. 3 Hitachi excavators
The coordinated effort enabled civic teams to complete the large-scale cleanup efficiently within a limited timeframe.

Environment Day Plantation Drive Adds Green Cover
As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, officials planted 60 saplings around Vengaiyan Lake to enhance green cover and promote environmental awareness.

Commissioner D.S. Ramesh directed officials to prepare an action plan for expanding plantation activities to other parts of the city in the coming months.

The administration also undertook beautification initiatives by decorating compound walls of government buildings with murals and artwork aimed at enhancing Bengaluru's visual appeal.
"More areas across the city should be identified for plantation activities as part of a structured environmental action plan," Commissioner D.S. Ramesh instructed officials.
Strict Action Against Plastic Rule Violators
Alongside the cleanliness campaign, enforcement teams intensified action against violations involving banned single-use plastics and littering in public spaces.

Officials registered 26 cases against individuals and commercial establishments found violating civic regulations.
As part of the crackdown, authorities collected a total of Rs. 30,000 in penalties from offenders.
The move reflects the corporation's commitment to combining awareness initiatives with strict enforcement to ensure lasting behavioural change.

Bengaluru's Green Mission Gains Momentum
The large-scale campaign highlights the city's growing focus on environmental sustainability through community engagement, waste management and ecological restoration.
Civic authorities believe that sustained public cooperation, coupled with regular enforcement drives, will play a vital role in preserving Bengaluru's reputation as a cleaner and greener metropolis.
Further environmental initiatives are expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks as part of the city's broader sustainability agenda.
