BJP secures 206 seats in historic Bengal victory TMC reduced to 81 PM Narendra Modi calls it the end of fear. Banerjee alleges seat loot
Kolkata: In a historic political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party is set to form its first-ever government in West Bengal after a sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, ending years of dominance by the All India Trinamool Congress. The BJP secured a decisive mandate, winning 206 out of 294 seats, while the Trinamool Congress managed 81 seats.
The election result also delivered a major political setback to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who lost her Bhabanipur constituency to her former aide-turned-rival Suvendu Adhikari, currently serving as Leader of Opposition in the state assembly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing party workers after the results, said:
“Bengal has been freed from fear and will now progress.”
The statement reflects the BJP’s campaign narrative, which focused heavily on governance, development, and alleged political violence in the state.
The election was also notable as the first to be conducted after a controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR), during which nearly 90 lakh voters were reportedly removed from the electoral rolls, raising concerns among opposition parties.
Observers note that the BJP’s victory could reshape alliances and strategies across eastern India, while the Trinamool Congress faces its toughest challenge in over a decade.
