JD Vance, Jared Kushner, and top US officials arrive in Pakistan as indirect talks with Iran begin amid ceasefire and nuclear tensions

Islamabad: A high-powered United States delegation has arrived in Islamabad, setting the stage for crucial ceasefire talks with Iran, even as deep mistrust and geopolitical tensions continue to loom large. The talks come after a two-week ceasefire announcement, raising cautious hopes for de-escalation.

US Vice President JD Vance reached Islamabad earlier today and was received by Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, signaling the significance of the diplomatic engagement.

Top US Officials Join High-Stakes Mission
Alongside Vance, senior figures including Jared Kushner and US envoy Steve Witkoff have also landed in Pakistan. Their aircraft touched down at Nur Khan Airbase in Rawalpindi, marking the beginning of what is expected to be intense and closely watched negotiations.

US President Donald Trump has made it clear that the primary objective is to ensure Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons, underscoring Washington’s firm stance heading into the talks.

Indirect Talks, Pakistan as Key Mediator
Notably, the negotiations will not be held face-to-face. Iran has refused direct engagement with US representatives, leading to a unique format of indirect talks, where both sides will remain in separate rooms while Pakistan acts as a mediator.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with senior officials including National Security Advisor Mohammad Asim Malik, will play a central role in facilitating communication between the two sides.

Iran Signals Caution, Names Delegation ‘Minab-168’
Iran has approached the talks with a measured and cautious strategy, openly stating its lack of trust in the United States despite positive initial signals. The Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, has been symbolically named “Minab-168”, in memory of students killed in a recent attack.

This naming reflects the emotional and political weight Iran carries into the negotiations.

“We are ready for talks, but trust remains a serious concern,” Iranian officials reiterated ahead of the meeting.

Clash of Strategies: Long Talks vs Quick Outcome
Sources indicate a clear divergence in approach between the two nations. While Iran appears prepared for prolonged negotiations, potentially using time as leverage, the United States is aiming for swift, outcome-driven discussions to demonstrate diplomatic progress.

Global Spotlight on Islamabad Talks
With key global players involved and tensions still high, the Islamabad talks are being viewed as a critical turning point. The outcome could shape not only US-Iran relations but also the broader geopolitical stability of the region.
