A Karwar youth who regularly fed a sick street dog out of compassion has now received a Gram Panchayat notice after the animal allegedly attacked villagers, sparking outrage and debate
Karwar: In a bizarre and controversial incident from Karnataka’s Karwar, a young man who fed a street dog out of kindness has landed in trouble after local authorities allegedly held him responsible for the animal’s behaviour.
The youth, identified as Tushar Lolekar from Baira village, has reportedly received a notice from the Gram Panchayat after a stray dog he used to feed allegedly attacked several villagers.
The unusual action has triggered debate over whether feeding a stray animal can make a person legally responsible for it.
Fed Sick Dog Near Bus Stand
According to reports, Tushar had been regularly feeding an unhealthy stray dog near a local bus stand for the past several days.
Residents said the dog later began showing abnormal behaviour and allegedly attacked multiple people in the village.
Following complaints from villagers, the matter reached the Gram Panchayat.
Officials reportedly inspected the issue and then issued a notice to Tushar, stating that since he had been feeding the dog, he should take responsibility for its management.
“I only fed the dog out of humanity. I am not the owner of the dog,” Tushar reportedly argued.
Youth Approaches District Commissioner
Unable to accept full responsibility for the stray animal, Tushar has now approached the District Commissioner, challenging the Panchayat’s action.
He has sought intervention and requested authorities to take suitable steps in the matter.
The case has raised wider questions about civic rules, stray animal welfare, and the responsibilities of citizens who voluntarily feed street animals.
Debate Over Stray Dog Responsibility
The incident has divided public opinion.
- Some residents argue that those who regularly feed aggressive stray dogs should help ensure public safety.
- Others say punishing people for showing compassion could discourage animal welfare efforts.
