A heartbreaking incident from Belagavi has sparked outrage after two sons allegedly refused to attend their mother’s funeral, forcing social workers to step in and perform her last rites with dignity

Belagavi: In an emotional and disturbing incident that has shaken many, an elderly mother who spent her final days in an old-age home died without her sons by her side. Even after being informed of her death, the two sons allegedly refused to come for the funeral, leaving social workers to perform the last rites as her own children.

The tragic episode has triggered anger among locals and renewed debate over neglect of elderly parents in modern society.

Elderly Woman Breathed Her Last in Old Age Home
The deceased has been identified as Anjana Dhamone, originally from Marihal village in Belagavi taluk.

She had reportedly been living for some time in an old-age home located in Shahunagar, Belagavi, after her two sons allegedly failed to care for her.
Sources said Anjana was suffering from age-related health complications and passed away recently at the facility.
Staff Called Sons, But They Refused to Come
After her death, staff members at the old age home informed both sons and requested them to come for the final rites.
However, their alleged response shocked everyone.
According to those at the home, the sons reportedly said they would not come and asked the staff to “do whatever is necessary” and complete the funeral themselves.
“We informed them their mother had passed away. They refused to come,” sources at the home alleged.
The response left staff members stunned and residents deeply saddened.

Social Workers Become Sons for Final Journey
With no family members stepping forward, local social workers took responsibility for ensuring the elderly woman received a respectful farewell.
As soon as they learned of the incident, city corporator Shankar Patil and social worker Gangadhar Patil reached the old age home.
They arranged the funeral and personally participated in the last rites with full traditional rituals.

They were supported by Nikhil Appugol and cremation ground staff member Nissar, who assisted in the arrangements.

Public Outrage, Praise for Humanity
Many citizens expressed anger at children abandoning the mother who gave them life and care.
At the same time, widespread appreciation has poured in for the social workers who stepped in despite having no blood relation.
The heartbreaking case has become a powerful reminder that while society may be changing, humanity still survives through compassionate strangers.
