Arrest warrant issued by 42nd ACMM court after repeated absence; detention linked to protest demanding SSLC exam cancellation during COVID-19
Bengaluru: Prominent Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj was arrested by Seshadripuram police in Bengaluru on Tuesday following the execution of an arrest warrant issued by the 42nd ACMM Court in connection with a 2021 protest case.
Police officials confirmed that Vatal Nagaraj was taken into custody and transported to court in an auto, drawing public attention to the high-profile arrest.
Why Was Vatal Nagaraj Arrested?
The case dates back to 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Vatal Nagaraj had staged a protest outside the residence of then Karnataka Education Minister S. Suresh Kumar.
The protest demanded that SSLC examinations be cancelled and students be declared pass, citing safety concerns amid the pandemic. A complaint was subsequently registered against him for the demonstration.
Court Action and Arrest Warrant
According to police sources, the activist failed to appear before the court for multiple hearings related to the case. This prompted the 42nd ACMM Court to issue an arrest warrant, leading to his detention on April 08.
“The arrest was carried out as per court orders after the accused did not comply with summons,” a police official stated.
Legal Proceedings Ahead
Following his arrest, Vatal Nagaraj was produced before the court for further legal proceedings. Authorities are expected to decide on the next course of action, including bail or custody.
Background of the Protest
The 2021 protest had gained significant attention at the time, as it came during a period of heightened concern over student safety and academic uncertainty due to the pandemic.
Vatal Nagaraj, known for his pro-Kannada activism and frequent protests, had strongly advocated for student welfare, demanding immediate academic relief measures.
