Long-standing rivalry explodes into deadly violence during festival in Hunnikeri village; victim attacked with deadly weapons, dies en route to hospital
Belagavi: In a shocking and brutal incident that has sent shockwaves across Karnataka, a 50-year-old man was mercilessly murdered during the Siddheshwar fair in Hunnikeri village of Bailhongal taluk in Belagavi district. The victim, identified as Sanganagouda Patil, was allegedly attacked for dancing in front of his rivals’ house, escalating a long-standing feud into a fatal confrontation.
Police have confirmed that a case has been registered at Nesargi Police Station, and eight accused individuals have been arrested in connection with the heinous crime. The arrested accused have been identified as Demappa Balagannavar, Manjunath Balagannavar, Rudrappa, Vijay, Surappa, Siddappa, Nagaraj, and Basavantappa.
What Exactly Happened?
According to preliminary investigations, two families had been involved in a bitter rivalry for several years. During the Siddheshwar fair celebrations, Sanganagouda Patil was reportedly dancing in front of the rival family’s house, which triggered objections from the accused.
The situation quickly escalated into a heated argument, which soon turned violent. The accused allegedly attacked Sanganagouda with lethal weapons, including sticks, axes, and iron rods, leaving him critically injured.
“The victim suffered severe injuries during the assault and succumbed while being taken to the district hospital,” said a police official.
Despite immediate efforts to save him, Sanganagouda died on the way to the hospital, highlighting the brutality of the attack.
Police Action and Investigation
Authorities acted swiftly, arresting all eight accused involved in the crime. Further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and any additional involvement.
The incident has raised serious concerns over law and order during local festivals, where personal rivalries often escalate into violent clashes.
On the Other Hand: Fatal Road Accident in Bengaluru
In a separate tragic incident, a 60-year-old lorry driver lost his life in a horrific road accident in Bengaluru. The accident occurred near the Satellite Bus Stand signal on Mysore Road during the early hours of the morning.
The deceased has been identified as Vijay Kumar, who was driving a lorry from Malur in Kolar district towards RR Nagar. Around 4 AM, while his vehicle was stationary at a traffic signal, another speeding lorry rammed into it from behind.
The impact of the collision was so severe that Vijay Kumar died on the spot. The Byatarayanapura traffic police reached the scene and cleared the vehicles, initiating further investigation into the accident.

Both incidents underline growing concerns over public safety, whether during cultural gatherings or on busy city roads. Authorities are now under pressure to enhance security measures and enforce stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies.
