Kempegowda International Airport pioneers biometric, contactless travel for global passengers, enabling seamless journey from booking to boarding
Bengaluru: In a groundbreaking move set to redefine air travel in India, Kempegowda International Airport is preparing to introduce a face-recognition-based, contactless travel system for international passengers marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country.
Already known for offering the advanced Digi Yatra facility for domestic passengers, the airport is now extending this technology to international travelers. The initiative promises a seamless and paperless journey, eliminating the need to repeatedly show passports or boarding passes.
This pilot project has been successfully conducted by Bangalore International Airport Limited in collaboration with IndiGo, Digi Yatra Foundation, and International Air Transport Association.
From Ticket Booking to Boarding Fully Contactless
The system enables passengers to move through every stage of the airport from ticket booking to boarding using only facial recognition. This eliminates manual document checks and significantly reduces wait times.
“This marks a major step toward seamless global air travel and enhanced passenger convenience,” officials said.
How the Technology Works
Passengers’ identities are securely verified in advance using biometric authentication. At the airport, facial recognition systems validate identity at multiple checkpoints, including entry, security, and boarding gates.
The system is powered by Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), ensuring that passenger data remains secure and under individual control. Additionally, app-to-app integration allows boarding passes and travel details to be automatically synced between airline apps and airport systems.
Boost to Security and Efficiency
With international passenger numbers rising steadily, this technology is expected to not only save time but also strengthen security protocols. Automated verification reduces human error while ensuring faster passenger movement.
A Global Milestone for India Aviation
Kempegowda International Airport has earned the distinction of being the only Indian airport participating in this prestigious global initiative aimed at implementing frictionless travel worldwide.
