Late-night crime surge in Bengaluru continues as 19-year-old delivery worker assaulted and forced into online money transfer by miscreants

Bengaluru: In yet another alarming case highlighting the growing threat to gig workers, a 19-year-old delivery boy was brutally assaulted and robbed of Rs 49,000 through a forced digital transaction near Nexus Mall in the early hours of March 31.

The victim, identified as Gopikishan, a resident of Thavarekere in Suddaguntepalya and originally from Uttar Pradesh, was working part-time as a delivery executive to support his education. The incident occurred around 1:30 AM, but surfaced only later after a formal complaint was filed.

Brutal Assault and Forced Online Transfer

According to the complaint, Gopikishan and his friend Omkar were waiting for an order outside the mall when three unidentified miscreants approached and demanded money. When the victim said he had no cash, the attackers allegedly assaulted him on his face and hands, creating panic.

The situation took a shocking turn when the accused snatched his mobile phone and forced him to reveal his UPI password, subsequently transferring Rs 49,000 directly to their account.

“They threatened and assaulted him before forcibly transferring money through his phone,” sources revealed.

Threats Silence Victim Initially

After committing the crime, the accused reportedly threatened Gopikishan with dire consequences if he approached the police, forcing him into silence initially. However, with support from family and friends, he later gathered courage to report the incident.

A complaint has now been registered at Adugodi Police Station, and authorities have launched an investigation to trace the accused.

Night Shift Workers Under Increasing Threat

This incident adds to a growing pattern of targeted crimes against delivery workers and night-shift employees in Bengaluru. Experts warn that gig workers, especially those operating late at night, are increasingly becoming soft targets for organised street crime.

Police Investigation Underway

Police officials confirmed that efforts are underway to identify the accused using CCTV footage and digital transaction trails. Authorities are also examining whether the suspects are part of a larger criminal network.
