Actor and former MP Ramya testifies in court against individuals who allegedly sent obscene comments and messages on social media, emphasizing the need to stop online harassment of women
Bengaluru: Actor and former Member of Parliament Ramya Divya Spandana, popularly known as Ramya, appeared before a court in Bengaluru on Monday in connection with a case she filed against individuals accused of sending obscene comments and abusive messages on social media platforms.
Speaking to the media after attending the hearing on March 10, the actor said she was present to record her testimony in the case, which relates to online harassment she allegedly faced on social media.
Court Hearing and Testimony
According to Ramya, the court had summoned her to provide her statement as part of the ongoing legal proceedings. She confirmed that the process of cross-examination will take place on a later date, as directed by the court.
The case revolves around alleged abusive and inappropriate messages posted on social media platforms, which prompted the actor to approach the authorities and pursue legal action against those responsible.
Ramya Explains Why She Filed the Case
While interacting with reporters outside the court premises, Ramya clarified that her intention behind filing the case was not driven by personal motives but by the larger issue of online safety for women.
“I had to come to court today to give my testimony. The court has asked me to appear again for cross-examination on the next hearing date. Honestly, I never wanted to pursue such a case,” she said.
The actor further added that seeing the accused individuals involved in the case makes her uncomfortable, but she believes the legal action is necessary to address a wider social problem.
“I am not doing this for myself. Women face a lot of harassment on social media. Such behaviour must stop, and women need protection. That is the reason I filed this case,” Ramya stated.
Growing Concern Over Online Harassment
Ramya’s case highlights the growing concern over cyber harassment faced by women on digital platforms. Social media networks have become spaces where public figures and ordinary users alike often encounter abusive comments, threats, and offensive messages.
Legal experts say that filing formal complaints and pursuing legal remedies can play an important role in discouraging online abuse and establishing accountability for offenders.
The case has also sparked conversations about strengthening digital safety laws and encouraging victims to report online harassment rather than ignoring it.
Next Court Date Awaited
With Ramya’s testimony now recorded, the court is expected to schedule the next hearing for cross-examination, where further proceedings in the case will take place.
Observers note that the outcome of such cases could set an important precedent in addressing cyber harassment and protecting women on social media platforms.
