During the Legislative Council session, Labour Minister Santosh Lad says acid attack victims will receive compensation based on severity through the Unorganised Workers Social Security Board
Bengaluru: The Government of Karnataka has announced financial assistance of Rs. 2 lakh for victims of acid attacks, Labour Minister Santosh Lad informed during the proceedings of the Karnataka Legislative Council in Bengaluru.
The minister made the statement while responding to concerns raised by Legislative Council member K. Shivakumar, who highlighted the issue of acid attack incidents and the need for stronger support mechanisms for survivors.
Compensation Plan for Acid Attack Victims
Addressing the House, Minister Santosh Lad said the state government has already held consultations regarding financial assistance for acid attack survivors and has finalized a compensation framework to support victims.
Under the proposed mechanism, acid attack survivors will be eligible for financial compensation of up to Rs. 2 lakh, depending on the severity of the injuries and the extent of burns caused by the attack.
The minister emphasized that the compensation would be disbursed through the Karnataka State Unorganised Workers Social Security Board, which functions under the labour department.
Compensation Based on Severity of Injuries
According to the minister, the financial aid will not follow a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, the amount will be determined after assessing the seriousness of the attack and the physical damage suffered by the victim.
Officials from the concerned departments will evaluate factors such as the percentage of burns, medical treatment requirements, and long-term rehabilitation needs before deciding the exact compensation amount.
This measure aims to provide financial relief to survivors who often face expensive medical treatment and long recovery periods following acid attacks.
Issue Raised in Legislative Council
The matter came up during discussions in the Legislative Council when member K. Shivakumar brought attention to increasing concerns about acid attacks and the difficulties faced by survivors in accessing adequate support and rehabilitation.
He urged the government to strengthen assistance programs and ensure that victims receive timely compensation and medical care.
Responding to the concern, the Labour Minister reiterated that the government is committed to supporting victims and ensuring that appropriate financial assistance is provided through institutional mechanisms.
Need for Stronger Protection and Support
Acid attacks remain one of the most severe forms of violence, often causing permanent physical injuries and psychological trauma to victims. Experts say that financial support, medical care, and rehabilitation services are crucial for helping survivors rebuild their lives.
Government initiatives such as compensation schemes are seen as important steps toward addressing the challenges faced by survivors, though activists often call for stricter enforcement of laws and stronger preventive measures.
