Airline introduces Rs425–Rs2,300 fuel surcharge citing surge in aviation turbine fuel prices amid West Asia tensions
New Delhi: Air travel is set to become more expensive starting Saturday as IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has announced a fuel surcharge on domestic and international flight tickets beginning March 14.
The airline stated that the move comes in response to the sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, which has increased operational costs. The surcharge will range from Rs425 to Rs2,300 per passenger, depending on the travel distance and destination.
Fuel Surcharge for New Bookings
According to the airline, the additional charge will apply to all new bookings made from March 14 onwards, covering both domestic and international routes.
Passengers booking tickets after the implementation date will see the fuel surcharge automatically included in the total fare.
Surcharge Details by Route
- IndiGo has specified the surcharge amounts for different routes:
- Domestic flights within India – Rs425
- Flights to the Middle East – Rs900
- Flights to Southeast Asia and China – Rs1,800
- Flights to Africa and West Asia – Rs1,800
- Flights to Europe – Rs2,300
- These charges will be added to the base ticket price as part of the overall airfare.
Reason Behind the Price Hike
In an official statement, IndiGo explained that the decision was taken due to a significant surge in aviation fuel prices, which has been influenced by geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
The airline noted that crude oil prices have climbed close to USD 100 per barrel, putting additional financial pressure on airline operations.
“Considering the sharp increase in aviation turbine fuel prices, a small fuel surcharge has been introduced while keeping customer impact in mind,” the airline said.
Second Indian Airline to Introduce Fuel Charge
IndiGo has become the second airline in India to introduce a fuel surcharge after Air India, which recently implemented a similar move.
The airline confirmed that the surcharge will come into effect from midnight of March 14, meaning passengers booking tickets from 12 AM onward will have to pay the additional charge.
Industry analysts say that if fuel prices remain volatile, other airlines may also consider revising their ticket prices in the coming weeks.
