Major crackdown begins across Karnataka prisons as authorities conduct drug tests on inmates in collaboration with NIMHANS, aiming to dismantle narcotics networks and rehabilitate prisoners

Bengaluru: In a major move to curb drug abuse and illegal narcotics circulation inside prisons, the Karnataka Prisons Department has launched a statewide drug testing drive for inmates under the direction of Alok Kumar.

The initiative, being implemented across prisons in the state, aims to identify drug consumption among inmates and dismantle illegal drug networks operating within correctional facilities.

Authorities said the campaign is being conducted in collaboration with National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) with a dual objective, to detect drug use among prisoners and provide rehabilitation, counseling, and treatment rather than punishment.

10 Percent of Prisoners Already Tested

Officials confirmed that around 10 percent of inmates across Karnataka prisons have already undergone drug testing in the first phase of the initiative.

The tests are being conducted by prison medical officers using specialized drug detection kits provided by the Prisons Department.

Under the ongoing drive, inmates are being screened for multiple narcotics substances including marijuana, heroin, and cocaine, as authorities attempt to identify drug usage patterns within prison populations.

The department plans to gradually expand testing to cover a larger number of prisoners in the coming phases.

Recent Incident Triggered Crackdown

The intensified action comes days after a controversial incident at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, where a staff member was reportedly caught smuggling drugs into the prison concealed in his underwear on March 9.

The episode triggered widespread concern about drug smuggling networks operating inside correctional facilities, prompting the prison authorities to launch stronger monitoring measures.

Officials noted that similar irregularities have surfaced in the past, highlighting the need for systematic checks and preventive mechanisms.

Focus on Rehabilitation, Not Punishment

Authorities clarified that prisoners who test positive during the screening will not face criminal cases under the current initiative.

Instead, the department aims to rehabilitate inmates through counseling and medical treatment, helping them overcome addiction and reintegrate into society.

If drug consumption is detected, inmates will immediately receive professional counseling, while those with severe addiction issues may be referred for treatment at hospitals and rehabilitation facilities.

Officials emphasized that the objective of the programme is to make prisons drug-free while encouraging inmates to adopt a healthier and disciplined lifestyle
