A clash between two families at the guest house in Khaga Kotwali leaves several injured; the bride refuses to proceed with the marriage after police intervention
Fatehpur: What began as a joyous wedding celebration ended in chaos in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district after a dispute over the bride’s pet dog escalated into a violent clash between the two families, ultimately leading to the cancellation of the marriage.
The incident occurred late Wednesday night at a guest house in the Khaga Kotwali area. According to local sources and media reports, the bride’s family had arrived from Prayagraj in buses and private vehicles, while the groom’s side came in a traditional wedding procession. Initial rituals, including the exchange of garlands, were completed peacefully.
Background of the Marriage
The groom, identified as Sumit Kesharwani, reportedly told authorities that the couple had been in a relationship for some time and had earlier eloped to solemnise their marriage at an Arya Samaj temple in Kanpur. Following discussions between the families, it was mutually decided to hold a formal wedding ceremony in Fatehpur with full rituals and invited guests.
However, the celebratory atmosphere shifted dramatically in the early hours of Thursday.
Dispute Over Pet Dog Sparks Clash
At around 4 am, jewellery presentation rituals were underway at the wedding altar when the bride’s pet dog, tied a short distance away by her family, began barking repeatedly. According to eyewitness accounts cited in media reports, a young man from the groom’s side, allegedly irritated by the noise, reportedly beat the dog.
This act enraged members of the bride’s family, triggering a heated argument that quickly spiralled into violence.
“Chairs and sticks were used during the scuffle, and several guests ran for safety when the situation worsened,” an eyewitness was quoted as saying.
Three individuals from the bride’s side, Shubham Gupta, Rishabh Kesarwani and Sangeeta Devi, reportedly sustained head injuries and were seen bleeding. One or two members of the groom’s family also suffered minor injuries.
Police Intervention and Medical Treatment
Police from Khaga police station reached the venue after receiving information about the disturbance. Officers intervened immediately, halted the wedding proceedings, and brought the situation under control.
The injured were taken to the Central Health Centre (CHC) for treatment and were later sent back to Prayagraj.
Bride Refuses to Continue Marriage
On Thursday, both families appeared at the police station for further discussions in the presence of local residents. During questioning, the bride clearly stated that she did not wish to proceed with the marriage following the incident.
Subsequently, a panchayat meeting was convened between senior members of both families. Gifts and money exchanged during the ceremony were returned, and a mutual settlement was reached. No formal complaint was filed, and neither side chose to pursue legal action.
