Hubbali: Two labourers lost their lives on the spot after falling from the fifth floor of an under-construction private medical college building near Gabbur in Hubballi on Tuesday. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over construction site safety and labour welfare in large infrastructure projects.
Fatal Accident During Construction Work
According to preliminary information, the labourers were engaged in construction work at the multi-storey college building when they slipped and fell from a significant height, resulting in fatal injuries. Eyewitnesses at the site stated that the fall occurred suddenly, giving fellow workers no time to react or provide immediate assistance.

Local authorities confirmed that both victims died instantly due to the impact. The exact cause of the slip, whether due to lack of protective gear, unsafe scaffolding, or negligence, is currently under investigation.
Labour Minister Visits Mortuary, Assures Action
Following the incident, Karnataka Labour Minister Santosh Lad visited the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) mortuary, where the bodies of the deceased labourers were kept. The minister consoled the grieving families and assured them of government support.
“This is a very sad and unfortunate incident. If any lapse in worker safety measures is found, strict action will be taken against those responsible,” the Minister said while addressing the media.
Compensation and Legal Action Promised
The Labour Minister further stated that compensation would be provided by the Labour Department as per existing rules and that legal action would be initiated against the culprits if violations of safety norms are established. He emphasised that construction companies must strictly adhere to labour safety regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
Police Investigation Underway
Police officials confirmed that a formal investigation has been launched to determine whether the incident resulted from negligence, safety violations, or structural lapses. Statements from site supervisors, contractors, and co-workers are being recorded, and safety documentation related to the project is being examined.
Officials added that further action will be taken once the investigation report is submitted.
