Intelligence Inputs Warn of Possible IED Threat in Chandni Chowk; Security Heightened Across National Capital

New Delhi: A high-level terror alert has reportedly been issued in the national capital following intelligence inputs suggesting that Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) may be plotting an improvised explosive device (IED) attack targeting a temple near Red Fort in the Chandni Chowk area.

According to reports citing intelligence sources, security agencies have flagged a potential threat involving an IED attack, with a temple in the congested Chandni Chowk locality identified as a possible target. Authorities have intensified surveillance and stepped up security deployment in and around sensitive locations in Old Delhi.

Intelligence inputs, as quoted in agency reports, suggest that the group may be attempting to avenge a February 6 blast at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan, and could be planning a major strike in India.

“Blast alert in front of the Red Fort in Delhi. Terrorists may target a temple in Chandni Chowk. Lashkar-e-Taiba is plotting an IED attack. They are planning a major terrorist attack in India to avenge the February 6 mosque blast in Islamabad, Pakistan. Major temples in the country can be targeted by Lashkar-e-Taiba,” intelligence sources were quoted as saying in the report.

Security Agencies on High Alert

Following the alert, security agencies have reportedly enhanced patrolling, deployed additional personnel and initiated thorough checks in crowded marketplaces and religious sites across Delhi. Senior officials are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any untoward incident.

However, the information could not be independently verified, and authorities have not issued a detailed public statement confirming specific operational threats.

Earlier Intelligence Warnings Ahead of Republic Day

The latest alert comes weeks after intelligence agencies reportedly warned that Khalistani terrorist organisations and Bangladesh-based terror outfits might attempt to target Delhi and other major cities ahead of Republic Day on January 26.

In January, reports citing intelligence sources indicated increased activity by Punjab-based gangsters allegedly acting as foot soldiers for Khalistani and radical handlers operating from abroad. These handlers were said to be using criminal networks to further disruptive agendas and destabilise internal security.

According to the alert, such networks were active across Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and were gradually establishing links with extremist elements.

Background of Previous Attack

The renewed security concerns follow a major explosion near Red Fort months ago, when a car blast close to the historic monument resulted in multiple casualties and exposed an alleged terror module. The incident had prompted a comprehensive review of security arrangements across the national capital.

With the fresh inputs, authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance around religious places, crowded marketplaces and key landmarks in Delhi. Citizens have been urged to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies.
