Husband Discovered in Bathroom, Wife Allegedly Dies by Suicide Before Police Arrival; Probe Underway in Bindki Area

Fatehpur: In a tragic incident reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district, a young couple who had solemnised a love marriage about five months ago were found hanging inside their rented residence in the Bindki area, police officials said on Friday.

According to local police, the deceased have been identified as Amarjeet Kushwaha (30), a resident of Jafrabad village in Bindki, and his wife Rekha Sonkar (25). Preliminary findings suggest that both died by suicide within a short span of time. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

Sequence of Events

Station House Officer (Bindki) Hemant Kumar Mishra, as quoted in reports, said Amarjeet was discovered hanging in the bathroom of the couple’s rented house on Lalauli Road early Thursday morning. His wife Rekha reportedly informed the police after finding him unresponsive.

However, before police personnel could reach the spot, Rekha allegedly hanged herself from an iron rod in another room of the house. When officers arrived and forced open the bathroom door to retrieve Amarjeet’s body, they found Rekha hanging elsewhere in the residence. She was immediately brought down but was declared dead.

A forensic team inspected the scene, collected evidence and initiated procedures to determine the exact circumstances leading to the deaths.

Family Opposition and Isolation

Police officials stated that the couple had been in a relationship for several months despite opposition from their families. Approximately five months ago, they reportedly eloped and solemnised their marriage without the consent of their relatives.

Following the marriage, both families allegedly severed ties with the couple. Initially, Amarjeet and Rekha stayed in Kanpur for a brief period before returning to Bindki in January this year, where they rented accommodation and began living independently.

Officials further revealed that in September 2024, when Amarjeet’s marriage was being arranged with another woman, Rekha had approached the police seeking intervention. Discussions were held between both families at that time, but neither side agreed to accept the relationship.

Investigation Continues

SHO Hemant Kumar Mishra confirmed that statements from family members and neighbours are currently being recorded. The exact cause and sequence of events will be established after the post-mortem reports and forensic findings are received.

Police have stated that further legal action, if required, will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
