A 28-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped at knifepoint in front of her partner on a bypass road near Silchar; police confirm arrests and ongoing investigation

Silchar, Assam: Amid growing concerns over crimes against women across the country, a deeply disturbing and inhuman incident has been reported from Silchar in Assam, sending shockwaves through the region. A 28-year-old woman was allegedly subjected to gang rape by more than seven men, who reportedly threatened her with a knife and carried out the crime in front of her boyfriend, according to police sources and the survivor’s complaint.

According to preliminary findings shared by the police, the incident took place on February 19. The woman was travelling with her boyfriend in a car on a bypass road located a short distance from Silchar town. During this time, a group of seven to eight men arrived in a Mahindra Thar vehicle, intercepted the couple’s car, and allegedly forced them to stop.

Boyfriend Restrained, Assault Allegedly Committed
Police officials stated that the accused first questioned the couple and subsequently forcibly restrained the boyfriend, preventing him from intervening. The survivor’s family has alleged that the assailants then took turns sexually assaulting the woman in front of him. The allegations have triggered widespread outrage, raising serious questions about women’s safety in isolated areas.
Forced Online Extortion at Knifepoint
In a further disturbing development, the complaint states that the accused not only assaulted the woman but also extorted money under threat. As mentioned in the FIR, the assailants allegedly forced the survivor to transfer ₹10,000 online from her bank account to one of their accounts before fleeing the scene.
“This is a grave and serious offence. We have initiated a detailed probe and are pursuing all leads,” a senior police official said, requesting anonymity as the investigation is ongoing.
Two Accused Arrested, Probe Continues
A case has been registered at the Silchar Sadar Police Station under relevant sections of law. Acting swiftly on the survivor’s complaint, police teams conducted raids and arrested two accused by Sunday. The arrested individuals have been identified as Nilotpal Das (25) and Subol Das (27), both residents of Ashram Road in Silchar.
Police confirmed that the survivor has undergone a mandatory medical examination, and her statement has been recorded before a magistrate. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the remaining accused involved in the case.
Journalist Allegedly Attacked for Reporting the Case
Adding to the controversy, a Silchar-based journalist, Surajit Chakravarty, who reported on the case, was allegedly assaulted. He has accused Arbind Das, a local businessman, of stopping him near the National Highway Police Station and attacking him. Police are examining this complaint as well.

Authorities have assured that no one involved, directly or indirectly, will be spared, and that the investigation will be carried out fairly and transparently.
