Shock and anger grip Shivamogga after an SSLC student was fatally assaulted in Sulebailu; police tighten security as investigation intensifies
Shivamogga: An SSLC student was brutally assaulted and killed on Monday evening in Sulebailu, on the outskirts of Shivamogga, after intervening to save his close friend during an altercation. The incident occurred as students were returning home after special classes conducted ahead of the SSLC examinations, triggering widespread outrage and heightened police alert across the city.
According to preliminary police findings, the victim, identified as Sankeet, had completed special classes at the Government High School, Sulebailu, and was walking home with his friend Girish when a group of local youths allegedly began provoking them. What started as harassment quickly escalated into a violent assault.
What Happened on Monday Evening in Sulebailu
Eyewitness accounts and police sources indicate that Girish was first targeted by the group. Seeing his friend under attack, Sankeet stepped in to rescue him. At that moment, the attackers allegedly turned on Sankeet, assaulting him on the chest, face, and abdomen. He collapsed at the spot after sustaining severe injuries.
Girish immediately alerted family members and nearby residents. Locals rushed to the scene and found Sankeet in a critical condition. He was taken to a private hospital, but succumbed to his injuries en route, police said.
Police Action and Investigation Underway
Upon receiving information, Tunga Nagar Police Station personnel rushed to the scene and conducted a spot inspection. Two juveniles have been taken into custody, and further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the sequence of events and the role of others involved.
“Initial investigation suggests the assault followed a brief scuffle after provocation. We have secured custody of two juveniles and are examining CCTV footage and witness statements,” a senior police officer told.
Following the killing, district police have imposed tight security across sensitive areas to prevent any communal unrest. Police presence has been intensified at the crime scene, McGann District Hospital, and other key locations. Officials said preventive measures are in place to maintain law and order.
A Friendship That Turned Fatal
Sankeet and Girish shared a close bond, friends and family said. Sankeet’s decision to intervene to save his friend proved fatal. While Girish escaped with injuries, Sankeet collapsed after the assault and died before hospital admission, underscoring the brutality of the attack.
Shivamogga City MLA Channabasappa visited the hospital to inquire about Girish’s health and to console the grieving family. The MLA criticised the government and police, questioning accountability and urging swift, stringent action.

The killing has sent shockwaves through Shivamogga, raising urgent concerns over student safety, youth violence, and law-and-order preparedness during the examination season. Residents and parents have demanded speedy justice and preventive measures to ensure such incidents do not recur.
