Bengaluru: Under the gracious presence and leadership of Transport and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) organised a significant welfare programme for the distribution of compassionate appointment orders and the presentation of accident and group insurance compensation cheques to the dependents of deceased employees.
Addressing the gathering, Ramalinga Reddy highlighted BMTC’s unwavering commitment to providing safe, reliable, and comfortable transportation services to the citizens of Bengaluru. The Corporation operates buses of various categories from 51 depots across the city. Currently, BMTC runs 6,301 schedules covering 66,302 trips daily, spanning approximately 13.06 lakh kilometers. On average, around 45 lakh passengers avail themselves of BMTC services every day.
In line with the Government of Karnataka’s focus on environmental sustainability and reduction of urban air pollution, BMTC has inducted electric buses into its fleet. At present, 1,727 electric buses are in operation. The Corporation owns a total fleet of 6,973 vehicles and continues to take proactive measures to enhance eco-friendly transportation services.
Group Insurance Scheme – Distribution of Insurance Compensation
The Minister also oversaw the distribution of insurance compensation under the revised Group Insurance Scheme for officers and employees. The scheme now includes a contribution of ₹350 from employees and ₹150 from the Corporation, totaling ₹500 per member.
Under the revised scheme (effective from 19.02.2024)
- In case of death due to accident (on duty or personal accident): ₹50.00 lakh compensation
- In case of natural or other causes of death: ₹10.00 lakh compensation
Further, from 01.10.2025, the compensation for death due to accident/other causes has been enhanced to ₹12.00 lakh (for applicable cases).
- ₹12 crore has been paid to the families of 120 employees who died due to natural/other causes.
- ₹6.00 crore has been paid to the families of 12 employees who died due to accidents.
Under the insurance scheme in collaboration with various banks, a total of ₹13.50 crore has been disbursed as follows:
Through Canara Bank – Total ₹11.50 crore (23 cases)
- ₹30.00 lakh – 10 cases – ₹3.00 crore
- ₹50.00 lakh – 9 cases – ₹4.50 crore
- ₹1.00 crore – 4 cases – ₹4.00 crore
Through State Bank of India – ₹1.00 crore (2 cases)
Through Union Bank of India – ₹1.00 crore (2 cases)

As part of BMTC’s compassionate appointment scheme, Ramalinga Reddy handed over appointment orders to eligible dependents of deceased employees to ensure financial and social security for bereaved families.
Since 2023, a total of 334 dependents have been appointed on compassionate grounds. With today’s appointment of 40 Junior Assistants and 42 KST Constables, the total number of compassionate appointments has increased to 416.
Additionally, to strengthen operational efficiency, 2,500 Conductor posts have been filled through direct recruitment during this period as per rules.
The Compassionate Appointment Scheme reflects BMTC’s commitment to human values and employee welfare by providing hope and stability to affected families.
The Minister also appreciated the integrity and dedication of BMTC employees. From 2023 to date, 298 employees have been awarded appreciation certificates and cash rewards for exemplary service.
- A passenger mistakenly transferred ₹62,316 instead of ₹6 via PhonePe. Due to prompt action by Depot 37 officials, the entire amount was refunded within a week. Smt. Chandrakala B.R., Depot Manager, and Shri K. Puttaswamy, Driver-cum-Conductor (Token No. 8011), were awarded ₹2,000 each along with appreciation certificates.
- A passenger traveling in a Vayu Vajra bus forgot a valuable robotic vacuum cleaner bag. The bag was safely returned through swift coordination by staff at Kempegowda International Airport Terminal-1. Shri Sridhar S. (Conductor, Token No. 9767), Shri Natarajan M. (Driver, Token No. 10416), and Shri Ramappa Jyothi, Assistant Traffic Inspector, were awarded ₹2,000 each along with appreciation certificates.
- On 31-01-2026, a woman passenger forgot a bag containing gold ornaments worth approximately ₹10 lakh in vehicle KA57 F1591. The bag was safely returned due to the honesty of staff. Smt. Ganga Poojari (Conductor, Token No. 12780) and Shri Govardhan (Driver, Badge No. 15989) were awarded ₹1,000 each along with appreciation certificates.
On the occasion, BMTC Chairman V.S. Aradhya, Vice Chairman Niketh Raj M., K.B. Shivakumar, IAS, Managing Director, Abdul Ahad, IPS, Director (Vigilance & Security), Shilpa M., IAS, Director (Information Technology), K. Kali, Deputy General Manager, Zonal Office – Canara Bank, Alok Kumar Chaturvedi, Deputy General Manager, SBI, and officers and staff of the Corporation were present.
