Bagalkot: Four people, including a two-year-old child, were killed and 17 others injured after a tractor carrying sugarcane labourers overturned near Katte Kere on the outskirts of Jamkhandi in the early hours of Saturday, police said.


The accident reportedly occurred around 1.45 am when the tractor driver suddenly applied the brakes. The two trailers attached to the tractor allegedly detached and plunged into a roadside ditch, with one trolley overturning over the other.


Victims Identified

The deceased has been identified as:

  • Manish Pandey (23)

  • Halaki/Alki Pandey (2)

  • Lakshmi (22/27)

  • Rekha (28/40)

Police said the child was the daughter of one of the deceased women.

According to preliminary reports, all the victims were residents of Gopwadi village in Pusad taluk of Yavatmal district, Maharashtra. They had travelled to Karnataka for sugarcane harvesting work.  Injured Shifted to Hospital  Seventeen others sustained injuries in the mishap. Of them, two seriously injured persons were shifted to Vijayapura for advanced treatment, while 15 are undergoing treatment at the government hospital in Jamkhandi.  Superintendent of Police Siddharth Goyal stated that the labourers were travelling in two trailers attached to the tractor when the accident occurred. Police rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information and conducted an initial investigation.  A case has been registered at the Jamkhandi Town Police Station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
