Mumbai: The Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department on Thursday said its primary objective in the Baramati plane crash investigation is to determine whether the fatal incident was caused by sabotage, criminal negligence, or any other unlawful act. The crash claimed the life of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four others.
Addressing a press conference, ADG (CID) Sunil Ramanand stated that the probe is being conducted in a detailed and professional manner, with multiple angles under scrutiny.
“The purpose of the CID investigation is to determine whether there was any wrongdoing in the plane crash. The investigation will also reveal whether there was any criminal negligence. Thirdly, the investigation will ascertain whether any sabotage or criminal act contributed to the accident,” Ramanand said.
He added that investigators have collected crucial evidence from the crash site and related sources. “If the probe reveals any criminal aspect, including negligence or sabotage, the CID will register a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code,” he clarified.
State Seeks CBI Probe
Considering the gravity and political sensitivity of the case, the Maharashtra government has formally written to the Centre requesting a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The aircraft involved in the crash was a Learjet 45 (VT-SSK) operated by VSR Ventures Private Limited. The jet went down near the Baramati airbase in Pune district on January 28 while Ajit Pawar and four others were on board.
The tragic incident has raised serious questions about aviation safety, operational oversight, and the possibility of foul play. As forensic analysis and technical examinations continue, officials say definitive conclusions will only be drawn after a comprehensive review of all evidence.
