Kanakagiri Taluk Incident Sparks Police Probe; Vijayanagar Youth Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault on Promise of Marriage
Koppal: In a shocking incident from Kanakagiri taluk, a minor student studying in a residential school reportedly gave birth inside the hostel toilet, prompting authorities to register a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Police have arrested the accused, a 21-year-old youth named Altaf from Vijayanagar district, who has been remanded to judicial custody.
POCSO Case Filed, Accused Arrested
Police officials confirmed that a formal complaint has been filed at the Kanakagiri Police Station. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had sexually assaulted the minor on two to three occasions before marriage. The complaint alleges that Altaf had promised to marry the girl and had threatened her not to disclose the matter to anyone.
Officials stated that the student delivered the baby inside the hostel premises, after which authorities and medical personnel were immediately alerted. The current condition of both the mother and child has not been officially disclosed.
Investigation Underway, Hostel Supervision Questioned
Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to the incident, including possible lapses in hostel supervision and reporting protocols. Statements from hostel staff and family members are being recorded as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Minister Orders Fact-Finding Probe
Koppal District In-charge Minister Shivaraj Thangadgi confirmed that the matter has come to his attention.
“The matter of a student giving birth in a residential school in Kanakagiri taluk has come to my notice. I have instructed the concerned officials to conduct a fact-finding investigation,” the Minister said.
