Family’s courageous decision at Victoria Hospital turns fatal bike accident into life-saving legacy across Karnataka
Mandya: In a deeply moving incident from Karnataka, a young man from Mandya who was declared brain dead following a bike accident has saved six lives through organ donation, transforming personal tragedy into a beacon of hope. The incident has drawn widespread appreciation from the medical fraternity and the public alike, underscoring the life-saving impact of timely organ donation.
The deceased has been identified as Darshan, a resident of Chikka Mandya village in Kasaba Hobli, Mandya district. According to hospital and family sources, Darshan sustained severe head injuries after falling from his motorcycle on February 22. Initially believing the injury to be minor, he returned home and rested. However, his condition worsened overnight, prompting his family to rush him to a local hospital, where doctors detected an internal brain haemorrhage.
Shifted to Bengaluru for Advanced Treatment
Given the critical nature of his condition, Darshan was immediately referred to the Victoria Hospital Trauma Care Centre for advanced neurological care. Despite multiple interventions and continuous monitoring, his condition did not improve.
After two days of observation and repeated neurological assessments, a senior medical team from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, including Kavya, Deepak, and Aseema Banu, formally declared him brain dead in accordance with established medical protocols.
Family Chooses Humanity Amid Grief
In an extraordinary act of courage and compassion, Darshan’s family agreed to donate his organs after counselling by the state-supported ‘Jeeva Sarthakate’ organ donation team. The decision enabled the successful transplantation of his liver, kidneys, heart valves, and other vital organs, benefiting six critically ill patients awaiting transplants.
Successful Transplantation at Trauma Care Centre
The organ retrieval and transplantation procedures were carried out successfully at the Trauma and Emergency Care Centre, Victoria Hospital, following all legal and ethical guidelines. Hospital authorities confirmed that the recipients are recovering under medical supervision.
Medical Fraternity Applauds the Gesture
Praising the family’s selfless decision, Medical Superintendent Deepak and Trauma Emergency Care Centre Special Officer Aseema Banu said:
“The coordinated efforts of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, Victoria Hospital’s Trauma Care Centre, and the Jeeva Sarthakate team made this possible. We sincerely thank the family for choosing to give life to others even in their darkest hour.”
