Route 260 and DN 47 Buses Crash Near New Town Mela Ground, IT Employees Among Injured

Kolkata: At least 12 passengers, most of them employees of IT companies, were injured after two buses collided in Newtown near Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The accident occurred around noon near the New Town Mela Ground when a Route 260 bus, travelling towards New Town from Alipore Zoo, allegedly attempted to overtake a DN 47 bus heading to Barasat from Salt Lake. During the overtaking attempt, the two vehicles collided, leaving several passengers injured.


IT Employees Among the Injured

According to police officials, many of the injured were IT professionals commuting to offices in the Newtown and Salt Lake sectors, which house major technology hubs. The injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable.

Drivers and Conductors Flee, Later Detained

Immediately after the accident, the drivers and conductors of both buses reportedly fled the scene, triggering public outrage. However, police later traced and detained them.


A case has been registered against the drivers on charges of reckless and negligent driving. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the collision.


Traffic movement in the area was briefly affected before being restored. Authorities are examining CCTV footage from the vicinity to determine liability.
